TRENTON, N. J. (AP) —A new drug for treating a common and potentially fatal breast cancer that has been linked to it could save lives.
The cancer drug Merck & Company is trying to find a treatment that could save lives by using a non-inhibiting estrogen to help it get back to normal, according to preliminary research.
The company said it has worked with doctors to develop a drug that is as effective as tamoxifen, which is sold as an anti-estrogen, which it said was the best way to treat breast cancer.
Tamoxifen blocks estrogen production, preventing it from doing that in most people. It also blocks a protein produced by the breast, which prevents the estrogen from binding to the breast cell.
Merck said it was not aware of the new drug's potential side effects, such as breast tenderness and bleeding, but said the results will be "very encouraging."
Tamoxifen, which is sold as an anti-estrogen, works by binding to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from binding to its target, according to the research, and also binding to the estrogen itself.
The new drug could help some people with breast cancer, such as patients who have been diagnosed with early breast cancer or who have had a recurrence of the disease.
